Prem Rawat Brings Message of Peace to Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre

Boston, Massachusetts, August 9, 2004 — Prem Rawat, also known as Maharaji, addressed faculty, community leaders, guests, and students at Sanders Theatre, Harvard University, at an event sponsored by The Prem Rawat Foundation.

Many of the most venerable academic, political, and literary figures of the nineteenth and twentieth century, including Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King have taken the podium at Sanders Theatre.

Maharaji was introduced by Tim Gallwey, author of best-selling books Inner Game of Tennis, Inner Game of Golf, and Inner Game of Work. Gallwey, a Harvard graduate and former captain of the Harvard Varsity Tennis team, recalled his years at Harvard listening to philosophical lectures and leaving with a feeling that something important was missing.

He described Maharaji’s message as simple, from the heart, and directed towards our own profound capacity to understand and to recognize truth in a way that intellect alone could never hope to. He said that what always struck him as unique and perhaps most challenging about Maharaji’s message is that it is not just theory, but verifiable—not by logic alone, but by personal experience.

Gallwey credited Harvard for opening many doors in his mind and Maharaji for opening the door to his heart and for allowing him in a practical way to access feelings of peace, of joy, of fulfillment—without external dependence. This, he said, has made all the difference.

This event was followed by an event in Toronto. Maharaji was introduced by Richard Patten, a member of the Ontario Parliament. Patten credited Maharaji for bringing a remarkable message of hope. He noted that Maharaji speaks of a peace that is more than the absence of war, that institutions cannot bring, and that needs to be established by each individual. The event was broadcast via satellite to 106 locations in 28 countries.

After holding events in New York, Ft. Lauderdale, and Los Angeles, Maharaji addressed faculty, guests, and students at the University of California at Berkeley.

On August 8, he held a global, live interactive satellite event. He was in a TV studio in California, and people in more than 150 locations in 29 countries throughout the world were able to ask him questions and interact with him.
